Monograph on Epilepsy Practice by V Natarajan, 1st Edition.
Epilepsy is a disorder that is not given its due importance in our undergraduate curriculum. It is also not dealt with adequately in clinical discussions during the undergraduate course. Hence, the practitioner is not adequately endowed with the knowledge required to treat a patient presenting with seizures, which is a common neurological symptom encountered after headache and dizziness. Emboldened by the response received to our earlier monographs on headache and dizziness, we are now publishing this monograph to equip the practitioner with the required and factual knowledge on seizures and epilepsy. Given the common occurrence of seizures in the community, doctors in practice and/or in the ER (emergency room) must be competent enough to handle the patient with the seizure, as they are the first person to deal with the patient. There are a number of books on epilepsy with chapters contributed by multiple authors and edited, but this is a monograph written by an author and co-author, which provides continuity and fluency in its entire presentation, blending seamlessly, between various chapters. This monograph does not purport to be a textbook on epilepsy and does not deal extensively with all aspects of epilepsy.
Key Features:
- This monograph comprehensively covers all aspects of epilepsy relevant to the management of an epileptic patient in practice.
- A clinical approach is maintained throughout this discussion making it easy to assimilate the material presented.
- Considerable weightage has been given to the elicitation of the history, as this is the most important aspect in the assessment of a person with seizures, leading to appropriate and efficient management.
- The types of epilepsy and the epileptic syndromes described provide insight into the evaluation and analysis of the possible ethology of the seizures.
- Advances in the evaluation of epilepsy, including presurgical evaluation, have been dealt with quite extensively. The various currently available antiseizure medications have been highlighted including the management of status epilepticus.
- The role of surgery, the procedures, and the indications have also been elucidated to familiarize the reader with the current surgical options.
- Added noteworthy features in this monograph are the discussions on breakthrough seizures, drug-resistant seizures, and epilepsy in special populations, including the novel New Onset Epilepsy in Adults (NOEA).
- The key points are highlighted after each discussion for a quick recap.
